Run of the PictureAs hurdler Johnny Dutch prepares for the biggest race of his life, more than just his Olympic dream is at stake. SynopsisJohnny Dutch is a world-class hurdler who directs zombie films in his spare time. He made the finals at the Olympic Trials in 2008 and again in 2012, coming within a half second of qualifying. As he prepared for the 2016 Trials, Johnny knew this would likely be his last shot at achieving his Olympic dream.
Yet an Olympic medal wasn’t Johnny’s only dream. Since his mother gave him a camcorder when he was a boy, he has been making DIY movies. He studied film production at the University of South Carolina and later directed a two-part zombie film available on YouTube. Knowing his track career would eventually end, Johnny was counting on Olympic success to open up doors to a filmmaking career afterward. But he also knew he would have to run his fastest race yet at the Olympic Trials. BackgroundIn September 2014, filmmaker Evan Kidd read a newspaper article about Johnny Dutch’s ambitions to qualify for the Olympics and become a successful filmmaker. Knowing a good story when he sees it, Evan contacted Johnny through Twitter, and the two met for coffee soon thereafter. Evan pitched the idea of a documentary film that would follow Johnny over the following two years as he directs Zombie films and trains to make the Olympic team. Johnny agreed, and the camera started rolling.
Since then, Evan has captured nearly 30 hours of footage, including Johnny in training and on the set of his films, interviews with Johnny’s family and coaches, and intimate moments in which Johnny shares his struggles and dreams. Johnny’s combined ambitions in track and filmmaking make his story unique, while his determination and perseverance make his quest universally inspiring.
After a heartbreaking loss in the finals at the 2016 Olympic Trials, Johnny’s identity crisis only intensified. Evan continued documenting Johnny’s struggle to define himself as both athlete and filmmaker, and the result is a moving story about one man chasing two dreams. Audience and DistributionJohnny Dutch’s character is as compelling as his story is inspiring. In both track and filmmaking, he has been determined not just to achieve his dreams but to achieve them his way. Over the course of his career, he has faced disappointment and setback, and yet he persists. Johnny’s thoughtfulness and perseverance make him an ideal role model for youth and college students (especially athletes), and his journey as a professional athlete makes for a story with obvious appeal to those audiences. Therefore, in addition to film festival, broadcast, and online distribution, the filmmakers will target youth and college leadership programs for educational distribution. Producer Bradley Bethel is a former English teacher and will be developing discussion guides to package with the film. The filmmakers plan to take “Run of the Picture” to youth and college students across the country so that they may be inspired and encouraged by Johnny’s story. FilmmakersDirector/Cinematographer/Editor Evan Kidd has lived in North Carolina most of his life and fell in love with film at early age. In 2014, Evan graduated from East Carolina University, earning his degree with honors in Cinematic Arts and Media Production. While still in college, Evan directed "Spazz Out!", a 35-minute documentary on the annual Spazz Fest music festival in Greenville, NC. After graduating college, Evan wrote and directed the narrative feature Son of Clowns (2016), which was an Official Selection to the Cucalorus Film Festival and is now available on Amazon Prime. He has also directed multiple music videos, including the video for Justin Garner’s “Love Strikes Twice,” which rotated on MTV Jams and VH1 Soul in early 2016. Evan’s most recent documentaries, “Flooded With You” (2017) and “We Lived the Blues” (2018) each follow a different family’s struggles in the wake of Louisiana’s Great Flood of 2016. When Evan isn’t editing his passion projects into the wee hours of the night, he is producing videos full-time for NC State University.
